Vivek Kumar Gupta has officially assumed the role of General Manager of Western Railway, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career in Indian Railways. A senior officer from the 1988 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Mr. Gupta brings with him decades of expertise in planning, executing, and leading critical infrastructure projects that have shaped India’s railway landscape.
Prior to this appointment, Mr. Gupta served as the Managing Director of the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), where he played a pivotal role in the rollout of India’s first Bullet Train project. Under his leadership, the ambitious high-speed rail initiative witnessed substantial progress, reinforcing India’s vision of futuristic and high-efficiency transport corridors.
Mr. Gupta also held a key role as the Principal Executive Director (Gati-Shakti) at the Railway Board under the Ministry of Railways. In this strategic position, he was tasked with driving coordination and integration among seven critical departments, including Civil Engineering, Electrical, Signal & Telecom, Finance, Traffic, Planning, and Economics. His contributions were instrumental in implementing the PM Gati-Shakti initiative, which aims to revolutionize multi-modal infrastructure development and enhance logistics efficiency across the nation.
Throughout his career, Mr. Gupta has demonstrated a consistent ability to align visionary projects with operational execution. From station redevelopment to network electrification, and from project monitoring to cross-departmental integration, his leadership has left a transformative impact on India’s railway modernization efforts. As he takes charge of Western Railway, stakeholders expect his tenure to further elevate infrastructure capabilities, passenger amenities, and seamless connectivity across the region.
